Malawi national football team Coach Ronny van Geneugden (RVG) has left out dead ball specialist Gerald Phiri Junior from his final 20-man squad for Friday’s 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Cameroon in Yaoundé.
According to a press release from Football Association of Malawi, Red Lions holding midfielder Chikoti Chirwa, who was not part of the team for a year as he was out of the country for military duties, and Be Forward Wanderers playmaker, Yamikani Chester, are the two new faces in the team.
Chirwa and Chester did not travel to Morocco where the Flames lost 3-0 early last month.
“The team will leave on Monday, 8th October, through Chileka Airport at 15:10 ahead of the fixture on Friday,” reads part of the release.
RVG said it is the responsibility of the technical panel and the entire nation to encourage foreign-based players who are lacking game time.
“We should not abandon them. Let us look at ways of helping them to continue believing in themselves,” he said.
The Flames are third in Group B with three points behind leaders Cameroon and second-placed Morocco.
Cameroun have four points whereas Morocco have three and pip Malawi on goal difference.
Comoros Islands anchor the table with a point.
