Breaking: MEC’s biometric voter registration kit found in Mozambique, Police investigating what happened

Malawi Electoral Commission’s biometric voter registration machine was found in Mozambique instead of Mwanza where it was intended to be to register people of Mwanza in the ongoing voter registration exercise.

MEC was transporting the machine from Lilongwe to Mwanza, but it ended up in a rail wagon belonging to Vale.

According to MEC’s spokesperson Sangwana Mwafulirwa, the body does not have an explanation to how the machine found itself in Mozambique but assured Malawians that all information is intact in the machine.

Malawi Police, through National Spokesperson James Kadadzera also confirmed the incident and said they are investigating.

“We heard that the machine was found in Mozambique and its now in Malawi. We will be investigating to establish what really happened,” said Kadadzera.

The machine is used to register and store voter registration information for the coming elections.
