After a missing biometric registration kit went missing and found in Mizambique, another laptop and a power bank used in the ongoing voter registration exercise was reported missing in Mzuzu.
A senior official connected to the issue has confirmed this but refused to be identified.
Our findings show that the laptop from registration kit number 1241 vanished between 23rd and 24th October last week at Katoto Secondary School hall in Mzuzu, and that distribution to registration centers for the last phase, started the same day. It had been transferred there from Chitipa.
It is reported that officers who were supposed to get the kit mistakenly took the kit number 1421 and after reporting the anomaly to authorities, they were assured that their kit was still at the warehouse which is the secondary school hall.
That the matter was reported to Mzuzu police station.
Malawi Electoral Commission Spokesperson Sangwani Mwafulirwa and his Northern Region Police counterpart Peter Kalaya have asked for more time before commenting on the matter.
The revelation of the missing laptop comes at a time people are still debating another lost but found kit.
The laptop contains all the registration data entered at the centre where it was used.
